How much do you tip?

I remember the first time I ever took a cab by myself in Chicago...
... the ride cost around $4.00, I gave the driver a $5.00 tip.
Ha! A cab rookie....I gave more for the tip than the ride.

We are {usually} generous tippers..{not as big as my first cab ride percentage wise}...
...but in restaurants, with haircuts and anything else we tip for.

Jeff and I both waited tables in our early years of adulthood...
...so we know how much a big tip can mean to someone.

Restaurants are starting to ban tipping...I am not really in favor of this.
I think tips are a good motivator and they encourage workers to do a better job, keep a smile on their face! and give better service to the people they are serving.
Their pay depends upon it.

Also...restaurants that are banning tips are raising prices by 20%...so don't think you're saving money!
In fact, if you're a tightwad, you'll actually be spending a little more. ;)

We had a party at our house and all the women were having a discussion about tipping...
..I was surprised to find out how much people tip who and when and where.....

So my question for you is ~ How much do you usually tip?
Do you tip more in restaurants than for a hair cut?
How about cab drivers...do you tip your cab drivers?

Do you think tips should be banned?

If you're a hair dresser, do you expect a tip or just the cost of the cut?

If you're a server, what do you think about new tipping bans?

  1. Well, well, well! I served/tended bar for a total of 12 years (started when I was 15) and Jason also served tables for five years, SO--->I would consider us big tippers. I would say the minimum our tip would be is 20 percent, but it can work it's way up to 30 percent or more (depending on service). Also, if I go sit on a patio with my girlfriends (most of which are ex-servers/bartenders as well) and get happy hour my bill might only be ten bucks, but taking into consideration the fact that we sat for four hours and that server easily could have turned that table three times we each leave between 15-20 bucks as a personal tip, which adds up quite nicely for the lucky server as there are always 4-6 of us. :) I don't expect everyday people to tip that much or to even take those things into consideration and another thing I would like to point out is we can tip that well because we rarely go out for dinner. Most of our meals are at spent at home. I am sure we would stick closer to a 20 percent tip if we were going to a restaurant several times a moth, but we don't. We have only taken a cab when visiting other areas, but we do tip the cab driver as well. This is the first time I am hearing about restaurants banning tips, but here is what I think about that--->two thumbs down. I agree with everything you said and here is the other thing that still gets me fired up. I hated when people would say, "Why should I have to tip? That's what your paycheck is for." Well actually the government expects that I will be tipped at least 8 percent off of my sales, so they then tax me on that and my check is only $150 every two weeks. Don't get me wrong, I made phenomenal money when I worked in the restaurant, but that was because of my tips and it was a testament to the kind of worker I was. Can you tell I'm a little passionate about it? LOL Tips shouldn't be banned--->this is 'Merica!!
